How To Get Out Of A Spiritual Funk

We can experience a spiritual funk for many reasons - whether we’re overwhelmed by personal problems, work, or even boredom. Like in any relationship with ebbs and flows, sometimes we feel like we’re attached at the hip with God, and other times we feel like He’s nowhere on the horizon. However, His promise to us in Matthew 28:20 is: “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” No matter where you are right now, I want to reassure you of that.

When you first address your spiritual funk, take the time to pray and seek guidance on why you’re feeling distant from God. Quiet yourself. Focus your eyes on Jesus. Ask Him for help. He may want to reveal sin in your life so you can repent, or bring up a person you need to reconcile with, or reassure you about a spiritual doubt you’ve been having. If nothing specific comes to mind, that’s okay! There’s always room to try something else.

Fasting can also help us to seek God on a deeper level and to better hear His voice. Fasting doesn’t necessarily have to be about food, although it can be. Occasionally, I’ve fasted entertainment, screentime, or other hobbies and redirected my time to reading the Bible and praying instead. If you fast, you remind yourself that He’s the most important part of your life in a tangible way, while also purposefully setting aside more time for your relationship with Him.

Other times, all you need to do to break out of your funk is to break out of your routine. Go on a nature walk. Read the Bible out loud. Jam along to a worship CD. Listen to a guided spiritual meditation. You can even involve other people when you’re trying something new to connect with God; when many believers are praying, worshipping, and talking about God as a community, everyone is more encouraged. After all, where two or more are gathered in His Name, He promises to be with them (Matthew 18:19).

No matter what you’re doing or feeling, God is in the trenches with you. I leave you with a final benediction to remind you that He is a constant in your life, even if your emotions and situations are not:

"For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 8:38-39
