You're Losing Your Marbles

Summer is coming and if you have young children like me, this translates to later nights, slow mornings, busy hot days, and sometimes just complete utter chaos. I remind myself that there are 936 weeks from the time a child is born to the time they graduate high school. If you have a high schooler, you know how fast this time goes. I know my time is limited and we must implement practical ways to structure our biblical teaching to our children. I am reminded of this Psalm, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12.

Summertime shows us that there is room to implement fresh routines, sharpen old ones, and gear up for a new year ahead for our children. Our children are image bearers of Jesus and therefore they should reflect Jesus to the watching world. They are to be his ambassadors. I have one big idea for parents: your routines will create your results.

We want our children's lives to be illuminated through God’s word. If you only listen to God’s word once a week and everything else 6 days a week, guess which one wins? The world will win every single time. I’d like to remind you of some hot tips that work in my family and have flourished into routines in our household.

1. Do First What Matters Most

  • Honor God first by spending time with him. Involve your children in this daily work. Open your bibles and invest in a Bible version that is specific to your child’s age. Do this again and again and again. Practice the power of same.

2. Teach Your Kids How To Use S.O.A.P.

  • It’s one thing to read the Bible. It’s another thing to actually understand it and apply it to your life.
    S - Scripture: What am I reading?
O - Observation: What stands out?
A - Application: How do I apply this to my life?
P - Prayer: Ask God to help you apply it to your life. Just as we are what we eat physically, we are what we consume spiritually.

3. Remind Them of Who They Are and Whose They Are

  • I am fearfully and wonderfully made
  • I am the head and not the tail
  • I am God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works he has prepared for me to do
  • I am a part of a royal priesthood
  • I am a son of the living God
  • I have the power to put sin to death
  • I have everything I need to live a Godly life
  • I have the mind of Christ
  • I have power and authority over the enemy of this world
  • Greater is He that is in me than He that is in the world
  • I am gifted
  • I am a new creation
  • The peace that surpasses all understanding dwells within me
  • My body is a temple of the Holy Spirit
  • I am Christ’s ambassador
  • I am chosen
  • I am justified
  • I am sanctified
  • I am holy
  • I am set apart
  • I overflow with gratitude and thanksgiving
  • I don’t have a spirit of fear but of power, love, and self control
  • The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in me and empowers me to do even greater things than he

4. Make Church Non-negotiable

  • We are better together and we are created to connect. Our goal is to not have our children graduate from their faith when they graduate from high school. It is to create a foundation, routine, and faith building home for them to return to each and every week. Kids will not make spiritual decisions unless they are socially and environmentally comfortable.

5. Never Underestimate The Power of a Praying Parent

  • You’ll never be a perfect parent but you can be a praying parent. Pray with and for your kids.

The days are long and the years are short. Every week we get closer to our children moving out and it is vital now that we create routines that create results in the lives of our kids. Because when you recognize how much time you have left, you tend to get more serious about the time you have now. Let’s make the most of it.
